4-day tour to Burgundy and Lyon, combining the discovery of lesser known yet beautiful castles (Ancy-le-Franc, Cormatin ...) and delicious wine tastings (Burgundy and Beaujolais)

Day 1:
Paris - Chablis - Ancy-le-Franc - Fontenay Abbey - Dijon

Drive south from Paris into the Burgundy wine country, stop in Chablis for a private 'grand cru' tasting. Chablis wines are dry white wines made from chardonnay, characterized by their purity, crispness, sophistication and minerality.

Visit the castle of Ancy-le-Franc, built in 1546, it is one of the most beautiful Renaissance mansion in Burgundy.

the abbey of Fontenay, UNESCO World Heritage, nesting in a verdant valley is a good example of what a 12th Century Cistercian monastery was like.

Capital of Burgundy, Dijon offers an exceptional cultural patrimony, such as the 'Palais des Ducs' and the Fine Arts Museum. Walking tour along 'the owl's trail'.

Day 2:
Clos Vougeot - route des Grands Crus - Beaune

Tour of the historical Clos de Vougeot, built by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. Surrounded by magnificent vineyards, it houses prestigious cellars and collections of winepresses from the middle Ages.

Drive along the Great Vintage Wines Road (Route des Grands Crus) through the vineyards that hold the illustrious names of the Burgundy wines such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Aloxe-Corton... private wine tasting before arriving to the town of Beaune

Beaune, ancient city with a splendid architectural heritage and Capital of the Burgundy wines. Visit the 'Patriarche' (or similar) wine cellars, dating from the 13th/14th century, where you will be able to taste about 10 different kinds of wine!

Visit the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune, a marvel of Burgundian-Flemish art. The medieval building, with its preserved décor and magnificent colored glazed tiles, houses the famous polyptych of the Last Judgment, by Rogier van der Weyden, masterpiece of Flemish art.

From the 15th century until recently it served as a charitable hospital, it is now an impressive repository of art and mementos of customs and medical practices in medieval Burgundy.

Day 3:
Château de La Rochepot - Château de Meursault - Château de Cormatin - Brou

Picturesque drive south of Beaune through the vineyards of the white Burgundy from to the impressive fortress setting of château de La Rochepot.

Wine tasting in the little town of Meursault, where the white wines, with a taste of hazelnut, dry and mellow at the same time, are considered among the best in the world.

Visit the unique castle of Cormatin with its extraordinary Louis XIII décor (circa 1630). In the Marchioness room, a magnificent French ceiling in gold and blue, with a painting of Venus and Vulcan, work of the second Fontainebleau school, symbolises love. The sumptuous Baroque décor in the Cabinet de Sainte-Cecile is dominated by very blue lapis-lazuli and rich gilding.

Visit the royal monastery at Brou, a token of eternal love built in stone and marble in the early 16th century. Discover this Flamboyant Gothic masterpiece, a princely mausoleum with three magnificent tombs.

Day 4:
Excursion to the Beaujolais wine road - Lyon

The Beaujolais region is known for its light red wines made from handpicked Gamay grapes which taste great chilled and offer a refreshing flavor profile.

Twenty centuries of history and a superb geographical situation at the confluence of the river Rhône and the river Saône give Lyon, the third city of France, an appearance quite unlike any other city.

From the hill of Fourvière, down to 'Old Lyon', across to the 'Presqu'île' and up to the 'Croix-Rousse hill', explore the city most famous districts and monuments, discover the rich history and taste the cuisine in a traditional 'Bouchon Lyonnais', as Lyon is also one of the best know gastronomic centers in France.

Return from Lyon to Paris by 'TGV' high speed train (2h)


Northern France - From Zola to trenches (WWI battlefields and coal mines World Heritage historic sites)

Overnight tour in the North of France including a visit to the Nord-Pas de Calais Mining Basin and First World War battle sites in he Somme.

Day 1:
Departs Paris towards the North to reach Lewarde close to Douai. Visit the historic museum of coal mines (UNESCO listed).
Learn about the coal production from the 18th to the 20th centuries in Northern France and the history of the French working class in the 19th century, whose harsh working and living conditions were immortalized in Emile Zola's novel, Germinal.
Put on a helmet and visit a gallery where the history of these men is told.

Continue to the suburb of Lens to see the “corons” these rows of labor houses once built by the mines owners to accommodate the workers on production sites. Most of them are still inhabited. See the two grand Terrils of Lens at the Base 11/19 the waste hills are 600 feet high.

Spend some time in Arras and see its beautiful 17th C. Grand Place and Place des Héros as well as its Belfry (UNESCO listed).

Overnight in Arras.

Day 2:
Visit the wonderful Louvre museum of Lens (a unique collection inaugurated in 2012 as a symbol of reconversion of the mining area).

Continue to Notre Dame de Lorette to see the largest Great War French cemetery and learn about the tragic history of WWI (UNESCO listed) and the evolution of the war in the trenches. See the Ring of Memory inaugurated on the same site in 2014 during the commemoration of WWI centennial.

Drive South to Albert to visit the Somme 1916 museum telling us all the details of the war of Trenches with showcases of objects (uniforms, weapons, bombs...)

A little bit South of Albert, discover the impressive gothic cathedral of Amiens, probably the best preserved gothic architecture facade in Northern France with thousands of sculptures (UNECO listed).

Return to Paris.

Overnight tour in Normandy combining the visit of the WWII most significant sites and museums and the pleasures of cultural and gourmet discoveries along the coast including a cooking class in Honfleur.
